The Island is rugged and hilly, though not mountainous.
From Bute, the nearest visible mainland land is the Cowal peninsula across the Kyles and the Firth of Clyde. East and north-east views often take in the Cumbraes and the busy waters between Bute and the mainland. On clearer days, views westward and south-westward can extend to Inchmarnock and the open waters of the Clyde, with Arran and Ailsa Craig part of the wider seascape depending on exact viewpoint and weather.
